Welcome to the Quilted Hayloft – Our Story Begins

If you had told me 15 years ago that quilting would become such an important part of my life, I’m not sure I would have believed you. Like many journeys, mine didn’t begin perfectly. It began with curiosity, a brand-new sewing machine, and a whole lot of learning along the way.

In 2010, my husband surprised me with a machine from Brother’s Project Runway line, and I was absolutely jazzed. I already knew how to sew thanks to my mom and home economics classes, but quilting felt like an entirely new world. Eager to learn, I signed up for a beginner’s quilting class.

That class, however, didn’t unfold the way I had hoped.

While I was excited, I was also trying to learn the ins and outs of a new machine—its features, the tools, the terminology, the rulers, the batting, the fabrics. It was a lot to take in at once. Unfortunately, the teaching style I encountered wasn’t patient or encouraging. Criticism came quickly, and I left feeling discouraged and unsure of myself. Even now, I can still hear those words.

This is the first little quilt block I made in the class.

But here’s the thing about quilting—and about life. Sometimes the hard experiences push us toward something better.

Instead of giving up, I decided to keep going on my own. I practiced. I made mistakes. I learned by doing. And then, at just the right time, I found a quilt shop near where I worked. The owner of that shop became the mentor I didn’t even know I needed. She was kind. She was patient. She explained things in ways that made sense. She encouraged questions and celebrated progress.

That was the turning point. With her guidance, my confidence grew. My skills improved. My love for quilting deepened. What once felt overwhelming became joyful. Over the years, I continued learning, stretching myself, and developing my own style—and to my surprise and gratitude, my quilts even began winning awards.

Today, The Quilted Hayloft exists because I want to be that encouraging voice for someone else.

I know how intimidating it can feel to start something new. I know what it’s like to wonder if you’re doing it “right.” I also know that with the right guidance, quilting can become not just a craft, but a comfort, a creative outlet, and a source of pride.

That’s why I’m creating beginner-friendly patterns and kits designed to walk you through the process step by step—whether you’re making your very first quilt or your hundredth. My first pattern and kit are currently in the works, and I can’t wait to share them with you. Release dates will be announced soon!

Each kit will include clear instructions and helpful pictures and photos so you can follow along with confidence. My goal is simple: you shouldn’t have to struggle to learn to quilt or feel unsure of where to begin.

I’ll also be offering a free class at a local quilt shop (details coming soon after the pattern release), where kits and patterns will be available for purchase.

And if you’d like to meet in person, I’ll be at Cat Spring Trade Days on March 15th with quilted tote bags, handbags and finished quilts.

This business is truly being built from the ground up—with heart, hope, and a desire to create something meaningful for others. I invite you to follow along as I grow The Quilted Hayloft and share this journey with me.

Because quilting is more than stitches and fabric.

It’s encouragement!
It’s community!
It’s starting exactly where you are—and discovering what you can create!
